Group Support & Education

Group settings provides a safe and open space for discussion on a wide variety of topics. We have a few different group support options to better assist your needs.

Emotion Coaching Family Therapy Group (For caregivers)

We NEED YOU! Parents and caregivers are such an invaluable resource and support system for a child or loved one with mental health struggles, including eating disorders. Watch this video to understand how IMPORTANT you are in the process!

Inspired by Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) developed by Dr. Adele LaFrance, this evidence-based 3-hour group will introduce and apply practical skills to strengthen relationships and respond to strong emotional reactions – expressions of worry, anger, hopelessness, and even silence. These skills can be invaluable when supporting your loved one through family based treatment in eating disorder recovery.

Parents and caregivers will learn the basics of navigating and guiding their loved one experiencing big feelings, emotional dysregulation, or mental health concerns such as eating disorders.

Different from other mainstream parenting models, EFFT is rooted in a deep belief in the healing power of families. Parents and their child are "wired" together; the model supports parents being active agents of healing through providing tools to restore connection in their relationship with their child, and feel more empowered when met with tough parenting situations such as food refusal . Parents will also be supported to identify, work through, and overcome many obstacles that surface through the journey of emotional and behavioral change.

This group is introductory and does not take the place of individual work with a therapist or dietitian. The group is intended to be educational and supportive in nature.

*The group is led by a Registered Dietitian trained in the EFFT model.

Path For Growth: Implementing faith to reach food peace (18+yr)

Spirituality is one aspect of a comprehensive care program for eating disorder treatment. At times, the journey to recovery and food peace can be very uncomfortable. During these trials, it is comforting to take rest in knowing the Lord will restore you.

This group is designed to work on healing your spirit while you are working on healing your body and mind. The structure of the group will be that of a book club. Group members will have the opportunity to share their experiences and struggles as it relates to the reading. Individuals can expect to feel supported through prayer and connection with others who value a relationship with God.

Teen Group for Eating Recovery (14-18yr)

You may feel like you're the only one striving for food peace and body acceptance in a society that values thinness and promotes diets. Let's get together and chat about how nutrition practices can make us feel at home in our bodies! We will explore how emotions, genes, movement, and comparison (to name just several!) impact the way we eat and how we feel in our bodies.

This group is designed to help teens connect with their peers in a safe environment and to support them as they develop a healthy relationship with food that will serve them for the rest of their lives. Under the careful supervision of Laura Brooks, RDN, LD, the teens in this support group will learn to offer and receive support in a healthy way that avoids the pitfalls of self-pity and peer-reinforced disordered eating.

Each week, this group will tackle a new nutrition-focused topic. They will debunk common myths about diets and "forbidden" foods, create strategies to avoid potential triggers, and learn exactly how bodies change over the teen years and why balanced nutrition is so important for this development.

Strength Within Support Group

Are you committed to recovery but struggling to find community in the journey? Eating disorder support groups play a unique role in recovery that can enhance individual therapy and nutrition work. This support group is a space for those struggling with a variety of eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, OSFED, orthorexia) to come together, share their experiences, and connect with those with similar struggles. Group members will have the opportunity to share their experiences and struggles, while also offering support to one another in a safe environment.

This is NOT a process group as it will be facilitated by a registered dietitian. It will provide opportunities for nutrition education and serve to empower you for recovery by knowing you are not alone.

Crossroads (18+yr)

Those with binge eating disorder and/or emotional eating often suffer in silence, filled with shame and guilt. Often, repeated self-promises to never over eat or binge again are met with attempts to control one’s food intake, which then lead one to fall into the cycle once more. This support group is a space for those struggling with binge eating, those with a history of binge eating, or those in larger bodies working towards food peace and body acceptance to come together, share their experiences, and connect with those with similar struggles. Group members will have the opportunity to share their experiences and struggles, while also offering support to one another in a safe environment.

Fuse: Connecting mind and body through movement (18+yr)

A major struggle for those in recovery is all or nothing thinking with exercise driven by shame of one's eating and body. This type of thinking with exercise can often lead to excessive, compulsive exercise that is unsustainable or exercise resistance. We will work on challenging this all or nothing thinking through experience. Individuals can expect to participate in a variety of physical activities that are focused on connecting the mind and body. Groups will be led by a registered dietitian who will provide a nutrition education component as it relates to movement.

This group is designed to be a safe place to explore movement for those in larger bodies or who fear engagement in physical activity.
